WORKFORCE TRAINING
Howard College has been successful in obtaining State Training grants through the Skills Development Grant for numerous industrial projects.
On another large scale project, Star Tek, Inc., Moore Development, the City of Big Spring, Howard College and the Texas Workforce Network in Big Spring conducted two large scale, project specific endeavors that greatly influenced Star Tek's decision to located a 400 person technical assistance center in our community:
- Conducted a large scale job fair to actually realize how many "warm body" applicants were interested in this field. Over 1,000 individuals filled out applications at the job fair.
- Howard College facilitated massive pre-startup training sessions for hundreds of the first hires by Star-Tek. This training was conducted on the Howard College Campus and funded through the a Skills Development Grant.
As well, Howard College has a unique reimbursement tool whereby the college can contract with the individual company's personnel to train the company's future employees. Howard College is reimbursed from the State of Texas for each "contact hour" and Howard College splits this reimbursement with the company as an added financial incentive.
